Pura Ulun Danu Beratan was founded in the 1600s and dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake and the water that feeds much of the region's farmland. Its tiered meru shrines sit right at the water's edge, and when the lake is high they seem to float on the surface. It's recognisable enough to be printed on the 50,000 rupiah note.
The temple sits high in Bali's central highlands, where the air is cool and mist drifts in off Lake Beratan. Mountains ring the far shore, and the whole setting feels a world away from the coast. Even at midday it's the kind of place where a light layer is worth having.
Around the temple, neat lakeside gardens open up with lawns, flowering beds, and level paths down to the water - easy walking and the spot for the classic reflection photo. Come early, before the mist burns off and the tour buses arrive, for the stillest water and the smallest crowds. A small entrance fee applies.
