Reaching the falls is a proper trek, roughly an hour down and an hour back, on jungle and village paths with a river to wade across near the bottom. A local trekking guide is required on site, and the steps can be slippery, so wear shoes you don't mind soaking. It is as much an outing as a viewpoint, which is part of the appeal.
Sekumpul is often rated the most beautiful waterfall in Bali, and up close it is really several tall falls dropping side by side into one green amphitheatre. High jungle walls curve around the pools, and the sound of the water fills the whole bowl. In the wet season the falls run fuller and browner; in the dry season they are clearer but thinner.
The climb is exactly why Sekumpul stays wilder and less crowded than Bali's roadside falls. Standing at the base among the jungle, mist, and noise of the water is the payoff for the walk. It is a strenuous half-day, so bring water, go in the morning while you are fresh, and allow two to three hours on site.
