Pick-up is around 2:30 AM for the drive north into the highlands, and the jeep climbs onto the volcano itself so you arrive in the dark. Then the sky lightens behind Mount Abang and Mount Agung, the clouds sit below you in the valley, and Lake Batur appears out of the black. It is one of the better-known sunrises in Indonesia, and for good reason.
This is the main difference from the trekking tour: you do not walk. The 4x4 drives across the hardened lava flow from the 1968 eruption and up to the viewpoint. It suits families with kids, anyone with knee trouble, or people who would rather not hike a volcano in the dark, and you get the same sunrise sitting down.
It is genuinely cold up there before dawn, roughly 10 to 15°C, so bring a jacket, long trousers, and closed shoes; most people underestimate it. After sunrise the jeep takes you back across the lava field and down past the lake, and a natural hot spring stop can be added on the way home if you want to warm up.
Your entrance ticket and return transport from Ubud are already included - nothing extra to pay for the activity itself.
