Jatiluwih is a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of rice terraces spreading across the slopes below Mount Batukaru. It is large and quiet, layered greens rolling away in every direction. There is no single viewpoint, just fields running to the horizon, and the scale is what stays with you.
Marked walking trails run right through the paddies, so you can step into the landscape rather than view it from the road. Follow the paths between the flooded fields, past farmers at work and the occasional shrine, at whatever pace suits you. The quiet out among the terraces is part of the appeal, and it is one of Bali's more peaceful stops.
Jatiluwih is still farmed the traditional subak way, Bali's communal irrigation system, in continuous use for over a thousand years and central to its UNESCO listing. Water is shared field to field through hand-cut channels, guided by the temples and the farming calendar. It is a working landscape rather than a manicured attraction, which is much of the point.
